In one of the attempts to scale Mount Everest before the final successful attempt in 1953, Mallory & his friend made a final dash for the summit but failed & today lie buried somewhere in the eternal snows.
They failed in spite of their tremendous determination, the
discipline of long training and the personal sacrifice of money & life, to
reach the highest point of the highest mountain in the world.
When one of the party, having returned to London, was giving
a lecture, he had on the platform behind him a magnificent picture of Everest
& as he concluded his address, he turned round & talked to the mountain
thus:
“We tried once to conquer you & failed; we tried again
& you beat us; but we shall yet beat you, for you cannot grow bigger, but
we can.”
